13: The Soviet Menace
"For those who had to go out and face them on the tatami, the new techniques were perplexing enough in themselves, but they were executed by unnervingly fit, highly-trained atheletes possessed by a desparate hunger to win."

How the Russians discovered judo on the eve of their resolution... the ban on judo in the era of Stalin... the creation of Sambo... the chance of Olympic medals brings Russia back to judo... when they were finally unleashed on the international circuit, Russian fighters shocked Japan and the west with their furious vigour and novel techniques and presented a serious threat to Japan.

14: The Emperor

"For a man who had an unbroken string of victories since he was nineteen, each successive contest added a little more pressure upon him. He could never relax for a moment. Every opponent that he faced, from a no-hoper to serious contender wanted to go down in the record books as The Man Who Stopped Yamashita."

The fortunes of Japan were rescued by Yasuhiro Yamashita, the greatest champion of modern times. He never lost a fight after the age of nineteen and went on to become an Olympic gold medallist and three-times world champion... his greatest test came right at the end of his career. When he retired seven years later, he came to London to be guest instructor at the Budokwai in Chelsea.

15: When the Gods Came Down to Earth
"Many gods came to our temple over the years and I always tried to get a practice with them. For me it was a sort of autograph hunting and I enjoyed the privilege of seeing their artistry at such close quaters- of being the brush with which they painted their mastery."

When in judo it is possible to train with the best in the world... and what it feels like to be on the receiving end.

16: Floored Personalities

"It was the upper-body strength of the westerners that really worries the Japanese. At the core of the problem faced by the Japanese was a fundamental difference between the eastern and western physique."
Westerners made increasing inroads into Japan's superiority partly because of their upper-body strength and also because of a more scientific approach to conditioning... the demands of judo for a type and level of fitness unmatched in most sports... Japan had to learn a new way.
